Play Autumn Hangman ๐ฅญAutumn words for every level
Autumn Hangman has three difficulty levels, so it works for younger children and confident spellers alike:
- Easy โ the feel of the season โ leaves, mist, mud and a warm jumper.
- Medium โ conkers, bonfires and hedgehogs: the classic autumn checklist.
- Hard โ the season's proper vocabulary, from equinox to deciduous.
How to guess autumn words
The Easy tier is full of four-letter words. Leaf, rake, wind, damp, cosy โ short blanks with common vowels. Guess A and I early.
This is a very British autumn. Conkers, wellies, jumpers and cosy (with an S) โ if you're used to American spellings, adjust.
Nature words fill the Medium tier. Squirrel, hedgehog, chestnut, orchard โ think of an autumn walk and you've covered most of the list.
Adjectives cluster on Hard. Autumnal, blustery, deciduous โ try common adjective endings like -AL and -Y when the word count runs long.
Tricky autumn spellings to watch
- autumnal โ autumn's silent N suddenly gets pronounced when the -AL arrives โ but players who forget it's there in the base word miss it here too.
- deciduous โ trees that drop their leaves โ four vowels in five letters at the end (-UOUS) is a rare English run.
- equinox โ the day and night stand equal โ the Q and X in one word make it a hangman classic.
- sycamore โ the helicopter-seed tree โ the Y where an I feels natural trips most players.
- russet โ the red-brown of autumn leaves โ double S, single T.
- conker โ the horse-chestnut on a string โ often misspelled "conquer", which is a different word entirely.
The stories behind the words
- Equinox comes from Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night) โ the two days each year when day and night balance.
- Deciduous traces to Latin decidere, "to fall off" โ the same root as "decay".
- Harvest is Old English hรฆrfest โ and for centuries it was simply the name of the season itself, before "autumn" arrived from French.
- Conker probably comes from the older game of "conquerors", played first with snail shells before horse chestnuts took over.
- Russet was a coarse reddish-brown cloth worn by medieval peasants before it was a colour or an apple.
Autumn Hangman for the classroom
Autumn is the first topic of the school year in most primary classrooms โ leaf hunts, harvest festivals, hibernation โ and this category matches it word for word. There's no hanging imagery, so it's suitable for every classroom: wrong guesses simply make a mango drop, and there are no ads during play. Teachers can also use Set a word to load in whichever term the class is discussing.
