What makes cat words hard to guess in hangman?
Very short Easy words. Mew has just three letters, and lynx has no A, E, I, O or U at all - only a Y - so vowel guesses can all miss.
Names with a gap. Eight of the 30 words have a space in them, from cat flap and sand cat to half of the Hard tier: Havana Brown, Russian Blue, Selkirk Rex, American Curl and black-footed cat, which has a hyphen as well as a gap.
Spellings that don't match the sound. Knead starts with a silent K, ailurophile starts with AI and has a PH that sounds like F, and caterwaul ends in an unusual -WAUL.
Borrowed and invented names. Nebelung comes from German, caracal from Turkish, and Munchkin from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, so everyday English spelling patterns are little help.
Tips for guessing cat words
Start with A, then L, E and R. Across the 30 example words above, A appears in 21, L in 18, and E and R in 16 each.
Try L early on the Hard tier. L is in 9 of the 10 Hard words - every one except Havana Brown.
Look for CAT inside a word. Seven of the 30 contain C-A-T: wildcat, cat flap, sand cat, fishing cat, cattery, caterwaul and black-footed cat.
Don't forget Y and double letters. Y is in lynx, Bombay, cattery and polydactyl (which has two), and four words have a double letter: scruff, cattery, Russian Blue and black-footed cat.
