How to guess city names

Treat them as names. City names are proper nouns from many languages, so everyday English spelling logic is a weak guide — expect the unfamiliar.

Split by length. Short city names are a small set — York, Milan, Osaka, Leeds — so a short blank is nearly solved. Long ones are usually many-syllabled transliterations.

Listen for repeated sounds. Some city names carry doubled or echoing letters — Johannesburg, Guadalajara — worth a guess once the length suggests them.

Then work the frequent letters — vowels A, O and E carry most city names, with R, N, S, L and T the common consonants. And use the hint: the answer is a city, which sharply narrows the field.
