What makes rock and gem words hard to guess in hangman?
Mineral names share endings. Six Hard words end in -ite - malachite, hematite, pyrite, fluorite, tanzanite, kimberlite - which helps once you spot it, but the front halves have nothing in common.
Spellings that don't sound out. Igneous, sedimentary and peridot are all easy to say and easy to misspell.
Two-word answers. Lapis lazuli, petrified wood, tectonic plates and cubic zirconia each need two words right.
Short words aren't easy words. Ore, mica and opal leave very few letters to build on.
Tips for guessing rock and gem words
Guess E and A first. They are the most common vowels in this list; U turns up only a handful of times.
Test -ite on long Hard words. If the last three blanks are free, I, T and E are a strong bet.
Look for -stone in Medium. Sandstone, limestone and birthstone all share it.
Think birthstones. Garnet, amethyst, diamond, pearl, ruby, peridot, opal, topaz and tanzanite are all here - nine months of the year.
